The Benefits of Contrast Therapy (aka hot/cold therapy)

Contrast therapy is beneficial for muscle and joint pain relief, boosting energy levels & mood, and improving mental clarity and circulation. I am such a big advocate for incorporating hot/ cold therapy into your wellness routine.

In today's blog post, I will share everything from what contrast therapy is, its benefits, who it is for and how to set yourself up for success to get more out of your session.

Enjoy!

What is Contrast Therapy

Contrast therapy involves going back and forth from hot to cold, typically with a sauna/hot water and cold water, such as a shower or tub. Generally, with contrast therapy, the individual puts their body in the heat, immediately followed by freezing water (ice water) for a couple of minutes. This process is repeated repeatedly, going back and forth between the hot and cold.

Who Is Contrast Therapy For?

Contrast therapy can be a great addition to those looking to boost overall health, increase physical and mental strength or need to recover from a workout or an injury.

Tips for Sucess

  • It's essential to stay hydrated while engaging in contrast therapy. I like to drink at least 2L of water before my session, and during my session, I like to have an LMNT Electrolyte drink to ensure I'm replenishing my electrolytes from excessive sweat.

  • Focus on breathing deeply during the therapy. Mind over matter is real when exposing yourself to these stressful elements. If you can control your breath and constantly remind yourself that you are safe, in control and doing something good for yourself- you will be successful. This isn't to say that it won't be difficult, but it helps you build the mental fortitude to get through it.

Where to Do Contrast Therapy

Contrast therapy can be done at designated facilities (such as Othership), spas, or other locations with hot and cold tubs. My favourite space to do contrast therapy is at Othership here in Toronto. I have been going consistently for the past year, and the health and mental benefits I have seen are incredible. I cannot speak more highly of the facility, guides and overall experience- if you live in Toronto or are visiting the city, promise me that you will put visiting Othership on your to-do list. If you cannot visit a facility, contrast therapy can also be simulated in your shower by going back and forth from hot to cold.

PS- I am proud of you if you engage in contrast therapy. It isn't easy stepping outside your comfort zone to become the best version of yourself, but it is always worth it.
