Morning Routine

I don't know about you, but my morning routine is such a pivotal part of my day! It is when I set the tone for my day and check in with my mind, body and soul. Setting up and sticking to a morning routine is a radical act of self-love.


It shows that I prioritized my well-being instead of beginning my day in a reactive state and allowing my calendar, phone, social media, daily tasks etc. to control the beginning of my day.


I cherish the moments of calm and inner peace in the morning when everyone else is sleeping and the crazy world has yet to take off.

Here are some of my non-negotiables for starting the day:




1. HYDRATE


After brushing my teeth, scraping my tongue and flossing - the first thing I do is HYDRATE. As we know, water is essential to human life, and our bodies need it to function properly. We are made up of about 60% water, and our bodies cannot produce enough of it; therefore, we need to get it through drinking water and/or eating certain foods to ensure we are staying properly hydrated.

I’ll be the first person to admit that I’m a little extra with my morning beverages, but hey, I feel like you may be too, so I’m going to give you all the deets.

Beverage #1:700ML of Filtered Water with Trace Minerals

Beverage #2: Warm Water with Lemon

Beverage #3: Greens Powder & Fiber Powder with filtered water (I usually drink this on my walk, and it really helps get my digestive system going)



2. MEDITATION

Meditation has given me so much inner peace. It’s an essential part of my morning. I like to think of meditation as nourishing my mind the same way that whole foods nourish my body. It brings me into my body and allows me to connect with my soul and something bigger than me. When I meditate, I’m not focusing on getting rid of all of my thoughts, but rather recognizing my thoughts, allowing them to come into my mind’s eye, acknowledging them and releasing them. By being still and giving yourself a moment to be silent, you are allowing your nervous system to decompress, which in turn will reduce stress, increase your ability to cope with adversity, and the list of benefits goes on and on.

If you are new to meditation, I would recommend checking out an app like Headspace. I used the platform to meditate and do an incredible job of setting the foundation for a successful practice.

3. GRATITUDE & DEVOTIONAL JOURNAL

The Daily Stoic & The Five Minute Journal is incredible, and I can’t go a morning without them. The Five-Minute Journal is quick, accessible and encourages you to think about what you are grateful for and what acts would make your day great. There’s also a daily affirmation space, which helps me practice some self-love and brings positivity to my day.

The Daily Stoic is a journal that is broken up into monthly themes, and each day there is a short excerpt from ancient philosophers related to that monthly theme. Author Ryan Holiday deconstructs the quote and gives an example of how it relates to modern-day living and encourages us to think about integrating the theme into our daily lives.

It’s a quick practice that starts your day off with a positive mindset, which is key.



4. MOVEMENT


After waking up in the morning, I do a light and gentle flow/mobility sequence to get my body moving after being still during the night. Doing this gets my lymphatic system moving and releases any tension that has arisen overnight.


I aim to get at least 10,000 steps daily and start my day with a 5km brisk walk wearing my Bala Bangles for extra resistance. Not only does walking in the morning feel amazing, but I am also am exposing myself to sunlight first thing, which helps set and regulate our circadian rhythm, signalling to our body that it is time to wake up!







Now, if we’re getting down to SPECIFICS. Here’s what the breakdown of my morning looks like

6:00 am- Alarm goes off

6:00am-6:15am- Oral Hygiene (brush teeth, scrape my tongue & floss) + Hydrate

6:15am-6:30/6:45am- Meditate

6:45am-7:00am- Gratitude/Journaling & Brain Dump

7:00 am-8:00 am- 4-5km Walk (Usually listening to either a Podcast or an Audiobook)

8:00 am- Morning Beverage (Matcha Latte, Turmeric Latte etc.)

After that schedule, my days look different! Some days I have sessions with private Pilates clients that start at 8:00 am, so we’re off to the races right away. Other days I will start my day with a workout and then make breakfast, and other days I grab my Matcha Latte and dive into work-related matters on my computer. No two days are the same, but regardless of what I have scheduled for that day, these morning rituals are my non-negotiables.



Now, I’m going to be real with you - on the days where I don’t meditate, journal or do some movement, and I can see a drastic difference in how I carry myself throughout the day (which I'm not sure is good, haha). If I'm transparent, I find myself impatient, more reactive and flustered. Not how I'm trying to live!



If you haven’t incorporated some “you” time first thing in the morning, I highly recommend trying it. I would start with gratitude journaling and then work your way to incorporate other aspects like Meditation, Movement etc. It’s all about starting somewhere and building that habit until you have a routine that makes you feel grounded and centred for the day to come.
